Siding Types
The various types of siding are lap/bevel, board and batten, T1-11 panel and shingles. Each of these types are available in either wood or fiber-cement.
Fiber-cement
The classifications of siding materials being used today are wood, fiber-cement, vinyl and stone veneers. Currently, the most common material used for siding homes in our area is fiber-cement. Hardiplank and Certainteed’s Weatherboard are two choices of products to choose from for fiber-cement siding. Fiber-cement siding offers siding options in lap, shingle, and panel sidings. Though many people have come to associate the classification of fiber-cement siding as the brand of Hardiplank we have always been sold on the manufacturing process and the finished product that Certainteed’s Weatherboard fiber-cement siding delivers.
Fiber-cement products are primarily comprised of wood fibers and cement. It is also important to understand that fiber-cement is manufactured from several green-sheets overlaying one another. Hence, a matrix of laminated sheets of wood fiber, silica, water and concrete.
When we were looking at which manufacturer’s product to consider as our preference to use we first identified the inherent characteristics of the composition. Concrete draws surrounding moisture, previous wood fiber and resin compositions have had serious rates of failure and anything laminated must be scrutinized for the possibility of delaminating. After some fairly basic comparisons of how manufacturers were producing their products we found our product of choice in Certainteed’s Weatherboards.
Certainteed’s product is manufactured with implementations such as design molds taken from real wood, laminated green sheets placed in hydraulic presses while interleaved with design molds, cured with specialized autoclave technologies and techniques and coated with the FiberTect penetrating sealing system. The results of Certainteed’s efforts produces a product with the highest interlaminate bond strength as well as perpendicular and parallel fracture strength with low moisture content, real wood grain embossing and a 2 year coating warranty prior to the application of paint. This product is the best substitute to the look and feel of real cedar.
Cedar
Cedar offers characteristics that just can’t be replicated. Cedar’s durability, variety of grades, profiles and textures – naturally – makes cedar the preferred siding material. Available in clapboards and shingles cedar has an array of choices – all of which is supplied by Lakeside Lumber.
Select Tight Knot Cedar
As indicated, this grade has knots conforming to industry grading standards. It can be pre-primed and resawn for paint-grade applications or raw and smooth for stain-grade applications. The drip edge is 11/16” thick which gives it great definition and a well defined shadow line at the overlap of each preceding course. Common exposures are 4”, 6” and 8”. Combinations of alternating exposures is also a popular look and texture when using this cedar product.
Clear Finger-Jointed Cedar
This grade is primarily A and better with a nominal mixture of B grade stock that has been joined
and primed for paint-grade finish applications. Most common drip edge thicknesses are ½” and
¾” milled smooth or resawn.Clear Vertical-Grain Cedar
This grade offers the best stability and finest consistent appearance of any grade. Without knots,
kiln dried and quarter sawn from edge grain, this grade is best finished with stain to emphasis its
color, character and figure. “Figure” is the natural arrangement of colors along with patterns of
grain which gives cedar an appeal similar to that of teak, cherry or walnut. Cedar has many similar
qualities with respect to various arrangements of color and grain that can give such figure.
Pattern Cedar Profiles
These clapboards are more commonly seen on period or historic homes. Available patterns are 105,115, 117, 137 and channel cedar siding. These profiles are unique in that cedar is a softwood which has exceptional milling characteristics which make such profiles economically possible.Shingles
Two species of cedar shingles are available depending upon the affect you desire. If your looking for the most natural effect with minimal maintenance then Eastern White shingles, from the “tree of life” would be the product of choice. These shingles need nothing more than a routine Bio-wash to replenish the natural silver shimmer that is inherent to Eastern White shingles. If you can picture the color of a piece of driftwood then you can picture the striking silver color of Eastern White shingles.
On the other hand, Westurn Red shingles offer the best pre-finished appearance stained.
Both species of side wall shingles are rebutted and resquared for uniformity.
Whether painted or stained, cedar offers the most flexibility and character when the common denominator of architectural integrity is accuracy or creativiity. This for some is a feeling or warmth that is natural and for others the vision cannot be accomplished any other way. Now take that vision of your dream home one step further with Superior Exteriors Northwest. We can fabricate any of the architectural details or accoutrements that make your vision a reality in our woodshop. Our personalized treatment can begin with your exterior needs such as, windows, siding, decking and finish in the landscape with fencing, outdoor living and patio furniture. We barter with what we have to offer and it doesn’t get any more skilled nor genuine.
Installation
Quality siding replacement has many commonalities with common courtesy. It’s observing the laws of the road and right of ways. Its giving an honest days work for an honest days pay. It’s returning something borrowed in better shape than received. It’s the Golden Rule! It’s accountable.
Siding projects begin with siding removal and it is a pretty invasive process. Noise, debris and thoughts of your mature landscaping fill the air and your mind. All homes have landscaping, which we must work around and some more than others. Observing the personal affects and landscaping of homes worked on is where training begins. We find this as much of the mindset of our approach to a remodel as the craftsmanship it self. Reasonably, it is just not in our better interest to ruin the start of a relationship by not having this conversation with our installers at the beginning of every job. In such instances when an accident should occur and a planting or other affect is rendered a casualty then we stand accountable.
Following the removal phase comes the prep phase. Nails are pulled or pounded and old sealants are scraped from the perimeters of windows and doors as well as frieze blocks. Once complete building paper is installed and flexible flashings for windows and doors are integrated within the installation of the building paper. This is what we call your envelope. It is in weatherboard fashion – or overlapping from the top down. We only install felt paper, as it is proven, and do not like to work with typical house-wraps due to degradation and permeation concerns. Our installation of flexible flashings are per AAMA ( American Architectural Manufacturers Association) installation. AAMA is a national trade association responsible for establishing voluntary standards for the window, door and skylight industry. Once a home is dried in then it is ready for the various trim treatments and accommodating flashings. Head flashings for windows and doors and deck ledger boards are most common. Sidings are then installed either by hand or gun based on the application with stainless steel fasteners typically. Some fastener applications are not available in stainless so hot-dipped galvanized grade fasteners are then used. Siding is cut to fit and installed level with all terminations to be sealed with compatible sealants given the application. Generally speaking, elastomerics at minimum for vinyl, and masonry applications with textured polyurethane being great for wood to wood applications when tooled. A good final clean up – rake beds, blow or wash down drive and walkways, decks and roofs. Now its time for some pictures and ready to be painted.
